Note for Parents: What to Do and When
Children typically begin to lose their milk teeth (also called primary teeth) around 6–7 years old, with tooth loss continuing until approximately 12 years. Here’s what parents need to know during this important phase
What to Do with a Wiggly Tooth?
A wiggly tooth is a natural sign that a permanent tooth is on its way.
- Best practice: Let the tooth fall out naturally.
- Kids often enjoy wiggling the tooth themselves—this is usually safe and normal.
What to Do If a Milk Tooth Gets Knocked Out?
Accidents happen—especially in active children. If a milk tooth is knocked out:
📞 Contact your pediatric dentist promptly for an evaluation.
❄️ Apply a cold compress to manage swelling or pain.
⚠️ Do not attempt to replant the baby tooth. Re-implanting can damage developing permanent teeth.
What to Do If a Permanent Tooth Gets Knocked Out?
This is a true dental emergency, and acting fast is key.
1. Immediate Steps:
🔍 Find the tooth quickly.
🦷 Handle by the crown only (avoid touching the root).
🚿 Rinse gently with milk or saliva (not water, soap, or scrubbing).
↩️ Try reinsertion into the socket only if it fits easily. Have the child bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
🥛 If reinsertion isn’t possible, store the tooth in cow’s milk or saline and keep it moist.
2. Seek Emergency Care:
📞 Contact your pediatric dentist immediately.
⏱️ Time is critical—the sooner, the better the chance of successful re-implantation.
Mouthguards for Active Kids
Children involved in sports or recreational activities should wear mouthguards to prevent injuries to the teeth, lips, tongue, and jaw.
Types of Mouthguards:
Custom-made: Designed by your dentist; most comfortable and best fit.
Boil and bite: Available at sports stores; better fit than stock models.
Stock: Pre-formed and ready to wear; often bulky and less effective.
A properly fitted mouthguard is essential—especially for children with braces or dental bridge work.
Dental Implants and Oral Surgery in Children
In rare pediatric cases, oral surgery or dental implant planning may be necessary due to trauma or developmental conditions. Our clinic is equipped with advanced tools and a compassionate team to manage these situations safely and effectively.
